Hydraulic Breaker Chisel Selection: Types and Applications
The chisel is the working tool of the hydraulic breaker. Selecting the correct chisel type for the application significantly affects productivity and chisel life.
Moil Point Chisel
The moil point (conical) chisel is the most versatile type. It concentrates impact energy at a single point, making it effective for breaking hard rock, concrete, and frozen ground. It is the standard choice for most applications.
Blunt Chisel
The blunt (flat-faced) chisel distributes impact energy over a larger area. It is used for breaking softer materials, compacting, and driving sheet piles. It produces larger fragments than the moil point.
Flat Chisel
The flat chisel is used for cutting and trenching applications. Its wide, flat face is effective for cutting asphalt, concrete slabs, and rock ledges.
Pyramid Chisel
The pyramid chisel has four cutting edges and is used for breaking very hard rock. It provides good penetration in granite and other hard formations.
Chisel Material and Quality
High-quality chisels are made from alloy steel with precise heat treatment. The correct hardness profile — harder at the tip, tougher in the body — is critical for impact resistance and fatigue life.
