Rock Drill Cylinder Wear: Detection, Prevention, and Replacement

The cylinder is one of the most expensive components in a hydraulic rock drill. Understanding how cylinder wear occurs and how to prevent it can significantly reduce maintenance costs.

How Cylinder Wear Occurs

Cylinder wear is caused by metal-to-metal contact between the piston and cylinder bore, contaminated hydraulic oil, and cavitation. The wear rate accelerates significantly once the protective oil film breaks down.

Detecting Cylinder Wear

Measure the cylinder bore diameter at multiple points using a precision bore gauge. Compare measurements to the manufacturer's wear limits. Visual inspection can reveal scoring, but dimensional measurement is essential for accurate assessment.

Prevention Strategies

Prevent premature cylinder wear by: maintaining clean hydraulic oil, using the correct oil viscosity, avoiding cavitation through proper system design, and replacing worn pistons before they damage the cylinder.

Cylinder Replacement

When cylinder wear exceeds the manufacturer's limit, replacement is necessary. Continuing to operate with a worn cylinder accelerates piston wear and reduces performance significantly.

Cylinder Supply

Nova Rock Drill supplies replacement cylinders for all major rock drill brands. Our cylinders are manufactured to OEM specifications with precision honing for optimal surface finish.
