Rock Drill Front Head: Function, Wear, and Replacement
The front head is the forward section of the rock drill that houses the chuck, front head bushing, and shank adapter. It is subject to significant wear and requires regular inspection and maintenance.
Front Head Function
The front head guides the shank adapter and transmits rotation torque to the drill string. It also houses the flushing water inlet and provides the mounting interface for the drill on the feed beam.
Front Head Bushing
The front head bushing is the primary wear component in the front head assembly. It supports the shank adapter and must be replaced when worn to prevent damage to the front head housing.
Wear Patterns
Common wear patterns include: oval wear of the bushing bore, scoring of the shank adapter contact surface, and erosion of the flushing passages. Regular inspection identifies these issues before they cause major damage.
Replacement Procedure
Front head bushing replacement is a routine maintenance task. The bushing is typically pressed in and out using a hydraulic press. Always replace the shank adapter at the same time if it shows wear.
