Rock Drill Water Swivel: Function, Maintenance, and Replacement
The water swivel allows flushing water to be introduced into the rotating drill string without leaking. It is a critical component for water-flushed drilling applications and requires regular maintenance.
How the Water Swivel Works
The water swivel consists of a stationary outer body connected to the water supply and a rotating inner shaft connected to the drill string. Seals between the two parts prevent water leakage while allowing rotation.
Common Failure Modes
The most common water swivel failures are: seal wear (causing water leakage), bearing failure (causing wobble and accelerated seal wear), and corrosion of internal components from contaminated water.
Maintenance Requirements
Inspect the water swivel for leaks at every shift. Replace seals when leakage is observed. Lubricate the bearings at the manufacturer's recommended intervals. Use clean water to minimize corrosion and seal wear.
Replacement
When the water swivel body is worn or corroded beyond repair, complete replacement is necessary. Nova Rock Drill supplies water swivels and seal kits for all major rock drill brands.
