Rock Drilling in Extreme Temperatures: Cold and Hot Climate Challenges

Rock drilling operations in extreme temperatures present unique challenges for equipment performance and reliability. Both very cold and very hot conditions require specific adaptations to maintain productivity.

Cold Climate Challenges

In cold climates (below -20°C), hydraulic oil becomes very viscous, making it difficult to start the drill and reducing performance. Seals become brittle and more prone to cracking. Water in the flushing system can freeze.

Cold Climate Solutions

Use low-viscosity hydraulic oil rated for cold temperatures. Install oil heaters to warm the hydraulic system before starting. Use antifreeze in the water flushing system. Allow adequate warm-up time before applying full load.

Hot Climate Challenges

In hot climates (above 40°C ambient), hydraulic oil overheats, reducing viscosity and accelerating oxidation. Seal materials degrade faster. Dust levels are often higher, increasing contamination risk.

Hot Climate Solutions

Use higher-viscosity hydraulic oil for hot conditions. Ensure adequate cooling capacity in the hydraulic system. Increase filter change frequency. Use heat-resistant seal materials (FKM/Viton) where available.
