Shank Adapter Selection Guide for Rock Drills
The shank adapter is the critical interface between the rock drill and the drill string. Selecting the wrong shank adapter leads to energy loss, premature wear, and potential equipment damage.
What Is a Shank Adapter?
The shank adapter transmits both rotation and percussion energy from the rock drill to the drill rod. It must be precisely matched to both the drill and the rod system being used.
Thread Types
Common thread types include T38, T45, T51, R32, R38, and R51. The correct thread depends on the drill rod diameter and the rock conditions. Harder rock generally requires larger thread sizes for better energy transfer.
Shank Dimensions
The shank must match the chuck dimensions of the rock drill exactly. Using an incorrect shank size causes rapid wear of both the adapter and the chuck bushing.
Material Quality
High-quality shank adapters are made from alloy steel with precise heat treatment. Inferior materials lead to premature fatigue cracking and sudden failure during drilling.
